SMATHERIA

We develop novel strategies for future therapies

At SMATHERIA, we develop levers to optimize therapies for SMA and other neurodegenerative diseases. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a fatal disease affecting children and adults. At SMATHERIA, we aim to answer fundamental questions about disease pathology and its molecular mechanisms. Based on those results, we develop assays and identify novel therapeutic targets for combinatorial strategies with existing treatments. Importantly, we use our expertise to extend this research to other neurodegenerative, neuromuscular and infectious diseases of the nervous system.

The team has performed academic research for the last 20 years on several aspects of SMA and motoneuron diseases resulting in a long list of publications in internationally recognized journals. SMATHERIA has been founded in 2021 to better serve the patient communities with preclinical and translational research. SMATHERIA is an independent and non-profit research organization located in Hannover Medical Park, Hannover, Germany. In our laboratories, we are fully equipped to perform state-of-the-art research on different system levels. We have developed a large range of cellular assays to answer research questions and find novel molecular targets by combining screening of proprietary molecular libraries with cutting edge bioinformatics. This work resulted in a large database of molecular alterations in the nervous system and other organs in SMA. This successful work is also extended to other neurological diseases and to neuroinfection.

Projects

We work on different aspects of Spinal Muscular Atrophy and other diseases. You can find more information about our projects here.

Teaching

We train the next generation of biomedical researchers by our academic teaching to develop and keep expertise on SMA and other neurological diseases.

About Us

We are a team of researchers devoted to our scientific projects. You can learn more about us here.

At SMATHERIA, our goal is to combine fundamental research, clinical strategies and the patient perspective to understand neurodegenerative diseases and develop novel therapeutic approaches. We perform preclinical research on neurodegenerative diseases such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) with a special interest on translational approaches based on patient perspectives.

We aim to study Spinal Muscular Atrophy at different systems levels using molecular and omics data to integrate these into in vivo models, in order to develop better therapies for patients.
